Graver tipped Pedernales
Middle Archaic, approx 4,500 yrs BP
Made of purple banded, agatized Alibates flint.
This needle tipped Pedernales is also in Joe Johnston's collection of his Gillespie County points he found on family property in the Pedernales River area.
Notes: Yet another of Joe's points that is actually a graver made of beautiful Alibates flint. This prized materials was very rare in Central Texas, being several hundred miles from the quarries in the Texas panhandle. It is likely that this was once a large knife blade point that had some minor damage and was graver tipped for very delicate ceremonial uses, such as tattoos. Interestingly, I only saw two pieces of Alibates in Joe's collection and both had been graver tipped by two different cultural people. Along with a twin to this point that is made of high quality black flint, this is about the biggest graver tipped point I've ever seen.
